This photograph was taken by Edward Hartwig, one of the best artists and photographers in Poland. He immortalised the pre-war Kazimierz and took contemporary photographs of the town. Today, his works have not only artistic, but also historical value. This photograph depicts the Small Market, formerly a Jewish district. During WWII, the Nazis tore down the old Jewish houses in Kazimierz and exterminated their residents. Nowadays, one of the reminders of this chapter in history is the kosher butcher’s stalls building, visible in the background.
