City Museum of Wrocław
Wrocław, Poland

Cristian Gotthard Hirsch was a landscape artist mainly painting realistic mountain vines. He studied in Wrocław and Berlin. The presented painting shows a sunny landscape from the vicinity of Szklarska Poręba. The work shows Śnieżne Kotły in the Karkonosze Mountains (literally Snow Cauldrons) with a shelter at the top. The painter skillfully creates a mystery mood in the painting through the contrast between the shaded and illuminated parts of the mountains, over which there is a heavy, clouded sky.
