The Spirella Company was founded in Letchworth in 1909. The American company, which manufctured aluminium corsets, looked to expand overseas and in 1909, its represetative, William Wallace Kincaid met Ebenezer Howard, founder of Letchworth Garden City. Spirella's attitudes towards its emploees matched those of the Garden City Movement and consequently moved into temporary premises at Letchworth in 1910. Its purpose-built factory was built in phases between 1912 and 1920.
