Beginning in 1919, Ashcan artist George Luks traveled to Nova Scotia on fishing trips. The watercolors he produced on these trips are marked by bold brilliant colors and distinct, faceted brushstrokes, with water comprising the bulk of the composition. In this dramatic example, the fisherman, who is perched on a rocky outcropping, wields a rod that bends under the weight of the catch.
