Born in Chicago in 1861, George Gardner Symons first trained at the Art Institute of Chicago. Following his studies, he traveled to California, Paris, Munich, and London, in search of inspiration.
In the 1890s, Symons became involved with the St. Ives Artists Colony in England. During his time at the colony, he developed his plein-air style of painting, which he would continue to practice upon returning to the U.S.
Symons was a member of The National Arts Club in addition to many other institutions. In addition to our club, his works can be found in the collections of the Chicago Art Institute, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Mulvane Art Museum, Norton Simon Museum of Art, and the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
