The Sun with Napoleon’s innitial letter

1805

Koper Regional Museum

Koper Regional Museum
Koper, Slovenia

Early 19th century; the 12 rays are concluded by a flower border, with little mirrors in between
The artefact belongs to the legacy of Napoleon Bonaparte I and his Europe, the period of Illyrian Provinces, and is unique in Slovenian territory. Its function was most probably a symbolic demonstration of great power. Napoleon personifies it, which can also be seen in the construction of the triumphal arch in Paris, designed on the principal of the Sun and its 12 rays (avenues).
In the past, the Sun was a symbol of different Gods (e.g. the Egyptian Sun God Ra or the Greek Apollo) as well as rulers (Louis XIV – the Sun King).
