In Japan, people have believed since ancient times that the god of the incoming year arrives with the first sunrise of the new year, and worshiping the first sunrise of the new year signifies a prayer for a good harvest and happiness for that year. The sunrise seen from a mountain peak is referred to as goraiko, a word said to have originated from the veneration of mountains as gods.
