The Taking of Quebec

Francis Swainecirca 1763

Royal Ontario Museum

Royal Ontario Museum
Toronto, Canada

The subject is typical of 18th century British marine paintings, but the small size and jewel-like quality of Swaine’s painting on copper sets it apart from its peers. Its intimate scale suggests display in a cabinet, or in a cozy corner of a domestic library or parlour. While a number of Swaine’s larger marines were also executed in print medium, there is no known print corresponding closely to “The Taking of Quebec.”
