Presented by Woodrow Wilson as a gift to John G. Jamison, a metropolitan police officer and pallbearer at Ellen Wilson’s funeral, this painting is believed to depict the gardens at the President’s summer home in “Harlakenden” in Cornish, New Hampshire in the summer of 1913. Described in The New York Times as “a terrace from which one looks over a bank of flowers and over a stretch of table land toward the distant hills,” it was later reported that Mrs. Wilson considered it “too intimate a picture of the Presidential Summer home at Cornish to be sold.”
