The Thames

Berthe Morisot1875

Museum Barberini

Museum Barberini
Potsdam, Germany

The strong accent of the red smokestack of a modern steel ship draws attention to itself. The thin application of paint gives the picture the appearance of an airy watercolor. During a stay in London, Berthe Morisot studied the works of William Turner at the National Gallery. They inspired her to paint this depiction of the Thames, which is the only picture that she produced during her stay.
