Amanda Sidwall studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm, 1864 - 1871, who had opened their ladies department in 1864. She traveled to Paris in 1874 and studied at the Académie Julian. Sidwall sold two paintings to the Luxembourg Museum in Paris in 1877 and she also drew attention in Sweden. Her portrait was considered to owning both soul and life, brilliant color treatment and power in the drawing. She is best known for her lively interpretation of genre scenes. Her impressionistic light and bright snapshots of nieces and nephews and their chores belong to her most significant contribution to Swedish art history, including "The thief of hearts" from 1884.
