Ultimately Rembrandt was left with a worn copper plate from which good impressions could no longer be pulled. The solution he devised this time was more radical: he replaced the representation on the copper plate with a new version. While Christ can still be seen on the cross, scores of figures and horses around him have been changed, and the mood is far more ominous than previously.
