This is a preparatory sketch for one the compositions painted as cartoons upon which the tapestries destined for the dining-room of princes (thefuture Charles IV ans María Luisa) in the Pardo Palace were to be woven. The sketch was shown to Charles III in May 1787 and the cartoons -now in the Prado Museum- was eventually painted.
