In Search of the Lost Originals of the Five Modern Treaties
On November 26, 1883 (the 20th year of the reign of King Gojong), Joseon and Great Britain signed the 13-article “Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation between Korea and Great Britain,” “Regulations under which British Trade is to be Conducted in Korea,” “Import and Export Tariffs,” “Tariff Rules,” and “Protocol.” On February 8 of the following year, Harry S. Parkes and Kim Byeong-si exchanged instruments of ratification, which were the original manuscripts written in English.
