The Virgin and Child Enthroned with Two Musician Angels

The Virgin is seated on a rich throne inlaid with marbles and holds the naked Child on her lap. Two musician angels are kneeling at her feet.
The panel, cropped along the upper edge, was probably once part of a polyptych. The lowered point of view suggests that the panel was designed to be in a high position.
Cristoforo Caselli was a painter from Parma long active in Venice, where he had the opportunity to study the works of Giovanni Bellini, Alvise Vivarini, Cima da Conegliano and Carpaccio.
The picture was probably painted between 1507 and 1510, when the artist, back to Parma, shows, together with the influences of the Venetian art, a good knowledge of Lombard painting, particularly that of Milan and Cremona.
