The Virgin and Child

Examination of this devotional painting reveals a complex blend of styles from the early Renaissance. Romanesque artistic influence is shown by regal symbolism (the blue robe and jewelled circlet worn by the Virgin), while the affection between the two figures recalls the art of the Gothic age. Memling’s style was linked to a focus on realism, especially in the portrayal of nature, and to a connection between divine figures and humanity.
