Found throughout Europe and dating mostly to the Middle Ages, historical “Black Madonnas” were often ascribed miraculous powers. The cause of the dark skin varies in each case. Scientific analyses on “The Virgin of Montserrat” reveal that the original color of the wood darkened over time. It has been subsequently repainted black throughout the centuries.
