The Visit

Vallotton already depicted the sensual gathering of lovers in an indoor setting in the two works 'La chambre rouge' (Lausanne, Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts), which contains the same bookcase, and 'Cinq heures' ( privately owned) from 1898, and in 'Colloque sentimental' from 1899 (Geneva, Musée d'art et d'histoire). These paintings continue the ironic and tantalizing erotic scenes of the woodcut series 'Intimités' (1898) in the medium of painting.
