According to the Gospel of Luke, an encounter between the Virgin Mary and her cousin Elizabeth is one of mutual rejoicing, as both women are pregnant. The composition is unusual in combining both German and Italian features of Renaissance art. The haloed female faces are reminiscent of the paintings of Fra Angelico, while the intricate drapery folds evoke the graphic art of Albrecht Dürer.
