The Washingborough Helmet

The Collection Lincoln1000/1400

British Museum

British Museum
London, United Kingdom

Very few 11th-century helmets survive, so the remains of this example found in the River Witham near Lincoln in 1787 is nationally important, though perhaps little to look at! Such conical helmets are depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry, in illuminated manuscripts and on 11th-century coinage.
