A view of the Waterloo Block, looking west. The foundation stone of the Waterloo Block, originally known as the Waterloo Barracks, was laid down on 14 June 1845, by the Duke of Wellington. The building, which takes its name from the Duke's greatest military victory, was originally designed to house a thousand men, but during the years it has served many purposes.
