Inspired in part by Japanese prints, which he collected avidly, Twachtman reduced the sense of depth in his compositions by limiting the value contrast (the comparative degree of darkness or light) between his paint colors. The lacy screen of tree branches across the top of the image also relates to Japanese art. This image probably depicts Horseneck Brook, which Twachtman painted many times. It flowed through Twachtman’s property near Greenwich, Connecticut.
