The painting represents Kalpa-taru, the mythical tree of gods accomplishing whatever wished under it.

As is commonly believed, the Kalpa-taru has upwards roots and downwards growth, that is, into the Earth. The artist has given an arrow-like form to the trunk’s root-part, such as shot into the space, and a rounded shape to its foliage such as the hard clay would allow it to take.
