Wu Shujun courtesy name Weizhang, was born in Peitian, Xuanhe, Fujian province. Gifted in Chinese calligraphy and painting in his early ages, Shujun gained painting skills from folk artists and later through self-taught. In 1919 he was granted a partial scholarship together with his countrymen Wu Naiqing and Wu Dun in Changting County by Chen Jiongming, a the Warlord in Guangdong, to go abroad and studied in France. Later he was admitted into the University of Paris and got a Doctor of Letters. He was corresponding with revolutionary activists like Cai Chang, occasionally wrote popular political criticism articles to advocate communism ideology. In 1938 he created over 100 oil painting and Chinese color painting works for the charity sales organized by the Chinese Artist Association in France fighting the Japanese Invasion. He died in 1940 when Paris was occupied by German forces.
