Scenic design for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by Adrian Mitchell, with music by Shaun Davey; based on the book by C.S. Lewis.
Any production of this C.S. Lewis work is challenging because the action moves quickly between the country home of Professor Kirke, with whom the Pevensie children are staying in wartime England, and the icy enchanted world of Narnia, ruled by the White Witch.
"And in searching for a look that would make Narnia visually intriguing, I was inspired by Ansel Adam's 1949 photograph of one of his favorite subjects, a towering tree at the western fringe of El Capitan Meadow. The photo is entitled, "Oak Tree, Snowstorm." Because white not black, comes to represent evil and paralysis in Narnia, I wondered what would happen if I made a negative image of Adam's photograph so that blacks became white, and white became black."
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe played at the Seattle Children's Theatre from November 2002 to January 2023, and November 2023 to January 2024. It was directed by Linda Hartzell, with costumes by Catherine Hunt, lighting by Rick Paulsen, and sound design by Christopher R. Walker.
