Scenic Design for The Marriage of Figaro at the Anchorage Opera, with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and libretto by Lorenzo de Ponte.
The Marriage of Figaro has often been called the perfect opera. Figaro, the Count's valet, and Susanna, the Countess' maid, are about to be married. The Count, however, has amorous intentions towards Susanna and wants to exercise his droit de seigneur.
"The director and I were inspired by a photograph of a curved French staircase that visually suggested the musical elegance and line of the opera. Director Bakman suggested a raked (sloped) stage surrounded by elevated platforms with gently curved steps leading from one to the other."
The Marriage of Figaro played at the Anchorage Opera in January 1991, and was conducted by Stephen Sulich, produced by Patrick Bakman, and stage directed by Joshua Major. Costumes were supplied by Malabar Ltd., and lighting design was provided by Lauren Miller.
