During the 1920s, the Indonesian youth had established numerous political youth organisations such as Jong Ambon, Jong Batak, Jong Celebes, Jong Islamic Bond, Jong Java and Jong Sumatranen Bond. In general, these were indigenous organisations independent of the other. Eventually, the call for a united Indonesia began to influence these organisations and stirred the desire to develop an Indonesian Youth movement based on unity through a youth congress in Jakarta. In this congress, the Indonesian youth declared a pledge, which consisted of the following: 1. We, the youth of Indonesia, pledge to acknowledge only one nation, the nation of Indonesia; 2. We, the youth of Indonesia, pledge to acknowledge one motherland, the motherland of Indonesia; 3. We, the youth of Indonesia, pledge to hold in high esteem one language of unity, the Bahasa Indonesia.
