Initial plans for the post-war reconstruction of the Berlin Zeughaus (armoury) included its conversion to a House of Culture, but by 1950 the idea for a national history museum had begun to emerge within the SED. With the building now under the auspices of the newly formed Ministry of Popular Education, the decision was taken to house the new museum in the Zeughaus. The Museum for German History (Museum für Deutsche Geschichte) was formally established in January 1952.
