During the Roman period, the theater was also used for gladiatorial combats. However, since the theater was also the site of executions of Christians by the Romans, it rapidly earned the enmity of the locals. Because of this, the theater was abandoned and buried by the residents after the demise of the Roman Empire. Fortunately, this allowed for most of the structure to be well preserved; it was discovered accidentally in the 1960's during the construction work around the houses in the area.
