The Thirty-five Tathagatas correspond to the thirty-five Buddhas who are addressed in confession. Those who have taken the vows and follow the practices of the ritual path rely on the images of the Thirty-five Tathagatas to remove the obstructions and purify themselves of the delusions of the mortal world, open up prajna, the highest wisdom, and directly attain the status of a Bodhisattva. The laksanas (outward bodily forms; Tibetan: mtshan-nyid) of the Thirty-five Tathagatas are basically the same, although there are slight differences in their mudras and colouring.
