This is a photo of Republic's new YF-84J as it streaks across the California desert on its first flight. U.S. Airforce and Republic Aviation Corporation announced today that the aircraft completed its first flight. The "Model J" is the latest in the series of Thunderjets and Thunderstreak Bombers with atomic capabilities. The YF-84J is powered by General Electric's new jet engine which is produced at the company's Aircraft Gas Turbine Division plant near Cincinnati, Ohio. Newest and most powerful of GE's production engines, the J73 incorporates many advances in design engineering. It has considerable more thrust and lower fuel consumptions than the famous J47, yet it is the same size.
