Thomas Clarkson Memorial, Bridge Street, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire

The memorial to abolitionist Thomas Clarkson (1760-1846) was erected in Wisbech in 1880-1. It was designed by the architect Sir George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878).

Constructed in limestone and red sandstone, the monument features a seated representation of Clarkson, holding in one hand a scroll, and in the other the broken fetters of a slave.

Clarkson was born in Wisbech. He became one of the pivotal characters in the campaign to end Britain's role in the transatlantic slave trade and the complete abolition of slavery.
