Sandby (1723-1798) presents a calm, expansive view of Whitehall with the Banqueting House on the right. The Holbein Gate (built in 1532 and demolished 1759) spans the roadway. Like many of the Sandby brothers' watercolours this example includes a number of figures by Paul Sandby that appear in other sketches. Again not unusually in the Sandbys' oeuvre, there are several other watercolour versions of the composition.
