Three Ostriches

Elias Geyerb. 1595

Dresden, Germany

The 1595 inventory of the Dresden "Kunstkammer" lists seven goldsmith sculptures in the shape of striding ostriches. Apparently, made between 1587 and 1591 by the Leipzig goldsmith Elias Geyer, five of these birds have survived in the Green Vault. Despite superficial similarities, they reveal significant differences based on their material rendering and their forms. This proves that all Treasury Art pieces, even if conceived as groups or variants of a certain type, were always unique, handmade items.
