Throne of Grace with the Virgin, Saint John, and the Instruments of the Passion

Salzburg Masterc. 1480

Renaissance and Reformation. German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach

Renaissance and Reformation. German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach

This painting is a fusion of a Throne of Grace and a Man of Sorrows between the Virgin and Saint John. God the Father is reaching out from a cloud to the body of his son, who died as a man and whose feet are resting on the ground. The two spheres express visually the difficult-to-grasp dual nature of Christ as God and man. Three larger angels are holding the instruments of the Passion.
