Theéodore de Beza (1519-1605), French scholar and reformer, he succeeded Calvin at Geneva in 1564; he published the Confessions de la foi chrétienne in 1559. The image may ultimately derive (with the addition of a broad-brimmed hat) from one of the half-length engravings in Beza's Icones (1580).
