I naturally chose the rustic, genuinely human setting of Tibet: such intimacy and simplicity, such delicate expressions and such an enchanting sense of the archaic. I can’t find any more appropriate language to convey my feelings. Women Washing Their Hair was inspired by a scene I saw on a Tibetan street. I saw a man pouring water for his wife to wash her hair in, which was fascinating to look at. The wife’ body was unbelievably beautiful and so I not only painted a view of her back but also a view of her standing and combing her hair.
