Tie-dyed Juan Blouse

China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

This short blouse is in a model that was quite popular during the ancient times, with broad bell sleeves, generally vertical but slightly crossed plackets, attached to which there are two tapes, one in red and the other brown. It was made of brown tie-dyed juan with each 1*1.4 cm area filled with one tie-dyed knot.
The tie-dyeing technique prevailed in Wei, Jin, Norther and Southern Dynasties (220-589 AD), applied on apparel of both the noble and the commoners. Tie-dyed attire can be found on many murals ranging from ancient Kucha in the west to Goguryeo in the east, but an existent tie-dyed garment in such a good shape of this one is quite rare.
