Patchwork pockets became fashionable in America about 1785. They could be bought ready-made but many examples, including this one, were homemade. Embroidering a pocket with the owner’s initials and the year it was made was customary. Pockets were used to carry any number of belongings, including keys, money, watches, recipes and sewing accessories
