Yokoku Katayama1783

Tottori Prefectural Museum

Tottori Prefectural Museum
Tottori, Japan

Over 1.8 meters high, this large painting matches peonies, the queen of flowers, and a tiger, the king of animals. The scenery was depicted with attention even to the smallest details, such as the tiger’s fur and mossy spots on the rocky ground. According to the indication of the year of creation in the painting, Yokoku made it at the age of 24 – a fact that speaks of his precocious talent for painting.
