The Tiger Taming Arhat was hardly mentioned in Buddhist scriptures. His image probably had its origin in the paintings of Master Fenggan Riding a Tiger into the Woods, often seen during the early Song dynasty. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, he was frequently included among the well-known Eighteen Arhats. Apart from showing his supernatural powers, he also signified the eradication of the three poisons of greed, anger and ignorance.
