Yang is one of the prominent figures of the Lingnan school of painting, and this is a fine example of his art. The tiger is a favourite subject in Lingnan art. Here, Yang captures its awe-inspiring manner with sketchy contours and rich brushstrokes in an assimilation of the Chinese ink tradition and Japanese scroll painting. In particular, the tiger's ferocious eyes are depicted as glassy sphere which highlight its orbed nature in reflecting light while projecting a sense of three dimensional illusion.
