Yang is one of the prominent figures of the Lingnan school of painting, and this is a fine example of his art. The tiger is a favourite subject in Lingnan art. Here, Yang captures its awe-inspiring manner with sketchy contours and rich brushstrokes in an assimilation of the Chinese ink tradition and Japanese scroll painting. In particular, the tiger's ferocious eyes are depicted as glassy sphere which highlight its orbed nature in reflecting light while projecting a sense of three dimensional illusion.

- Artist's Biography: Yang studied art in Japan in his early years. After returning to China in 1938, he was on the committee of the Society for the Promotion of Chinese Culture. During the Sino-Japanese War, he founded the Xie Club with Feng Kanghou and Gao Jianfu. After the War, he returned to Guangzhou and founded the Six Men Painting Society with Zhao Shao'ang, Chen Shuren, Guan Shanyue, Li Gemin and Gao Jianfu. He settled in Hong Kong in 1948. In 1970, he founded the Chun Feng Painting Society through which he gave art lessons. He was awarded an honorary degree from the Chinese Academic Research Institute, Taiwan in the same year.
