Test piece for a panel to feature around the external door of Tabacaria Mónaco, in Rossio, Lisbon. Fragment of narrative panel of 4 x 2 tiles painted to depict a frog sitting on the pad of a water lily in flower, in a pond, taking snuff from a box held in the foot of a stork.
The theme is approached with humour and is directly related to Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro’s graphic work. Although the colours recall tiles from earlier periods, the design of the frame and the choice of elements refer to the grammar of the Art Nouveau style. The artist worked on the decoration of the façades and interiors of this commercial establishment.
