Castroville, United States

S-shaped tie-rod plates, like these on the Vance House, were used to reinforce stone buildings in German-Texas communities. An iron rod passes through opposing walls of a building, and anchor plates are affixed to the wall exteriors and connected by the rod. The assembly protects the building walls from bowing. The inn, Vance House, and mill buildings all exhibit S-shaped tie-rod plates.
