Tile ‘Maria da Paciência’

Painted tile with three representations of ‘Old Hag Maria’, two of them showing her flying and one bending over a frog, in a pond with reeds. This restless female character was created in the artist’s newspapers, featuring prominently in the humorous periodical Pontos nos ii (1885-1891), where she was known as ‘Maria da Paciência’ (Patient Maria).
