Among the many unique features of this historic synagogue are hand painted Chinese blue and white porcelain tiles, each unique in design, on the floors of the synagogue. Ezekiel Rahabi, a wealthy Jewish spice trader in Kochi commissioned the tiles brought from Canton, China to Kochi in the 18th century, to refurbish the interior of the Kochi synagogue. Rahabi was the "Chief Merchant" of the Dutch East India Company for Inter-Asia trade between India and the Far East.
