Titus, the Artist’s Son

Rembrandtca. 1656

Rijksmuseum

Rijksmuseum
Amsterdam, Netherlands

This delicate little etching shows Rembrandt’s son Titus at about 13 or 14 years old. He was the only child from Rembrandt’s marriage with Saskia Uylenburgh to survive infancy. The dark shadow on the right side of his face and the downcast eyes suggest a contemplative, perhaps even troubled, mood. Rembrandt conveyed the doublet and the cloak casually draped over his shoulder with just a few lines.
