To the Water Fountain

The central figure here is a young girl carrying a water amphora on her head as she walks slowly and proudly. The severe tone of the composition and the classicism of the figure’s pose infuse great dignity in the humble subject, as was common in French painting. The work is a perfect example of the production of De Maria Bergler who was also known as ‘the gentleman painter'.
