The jar features the initials “H.H.”, the inscription “Tobacco”, the date “1893”, and a pipe, all applied in yellowish-white slip, and the lid is also embellished with this type of applied décor. The clay for this came from the quarries of the town of Tegelen. Especially between 1870 and 1900 many jars were manufactured here to individual order. They were a prestigious good used to store pipe or chewing tobacco. Their unusual shape is modelled on the vessels used in the pharmacies of the period because tobacco used to be sold by the latter in the past.
