This 3rd-4th century figure of a rhinoceros-like beast with three horns is a tomb guardian. It would have been placed near the front of a tomb to protect the deceased. Over the centuries in China, tomb guardians took the form of fantastical beasts, sometimes with human heads, and menacing warriors dressed in armor.
